REVIEW-The de facto ride in south central Texas, and perhaps the state.  Nothing else comes close. Within a 150 mile radius of Austin, you should not even consider missing this run.

OVERVIEW- Uphill, downhill, left & right, these roads will challenge your ability. The route includes mountain curves and breaks across river laden low lands and passes near a 1/3 replica of Stonehenge. Lots of trees and low water crossings. FM 336 is crossed with quite a few cattle guards. You will be in a very remote area. Cell phones may not work and you should fuel up when you can. Traffic can vary, but expect to see it, as this is a very popular run for bikers, cagers and even some brave folks on bicycles. You can get a bite to eat in most of the towns at places such as BJ's in Camp Wood - The Lone Star Motorcycle Museum in Vander Pool makes a decent burger in their snack shop - Frio River Canyon Lodge in Leakey has a great restaurant.

PLEASE NOTE- It is wise to heed the curve speed warnings. Watch for falling rock as you will be riding along the face of sheer cliffs with 400 foot plus drops to the other side. Watch for falling rocks from the cliffs above. A slight deviation in a curve could result in dire consequences. Some routes should not be attempted after dark. The deer-wildlife factor is high after twilight. This route includes many low water crossings. A sudden downpour is not uncommon for this area, and could result in being stranded between crossings. March to late May can bring strong thunderstorms with hail, gusty winds and flooding rains.

MILES-150+

BEGIN) Proceed south on Hwy. 16 out of Kerrville. After several miles the road becomes very interesting. It narrows with lots of hard curves, up and downhill. You will be along side some high hills with deep drops to the other side. Follow to Medina and go right at 337.  Follow 337 to the intersect with 187 and go right. After a short distance pick 337 up again near Vanderpool to the left. OR~if you want to take in a great motorcycle museum continue straight on 187 for about 5 miles and look for the            Lone Star Motorcycle Museum on the left. They had a gravel parking lot last time I was there...so be wary. If you do hit the museum just come back 187 and pick up 337 on the right.

Next Leg)

Out of Vanderpool follow 337 to Leaky (pronounced Lay-Key).  Take in the Biker Barn on the left about 1/4 mile out of town. More gravel here so watch it.  Here you can shop for souvenirs, take a break or grab a drink/munchies. Then head back down on 337 for Camp Wood. At the intersect with Hwy. 55 go right.  There's a great cafe just ahead (look for the bikes) so grab some grub if you're hungry. Out of Camp Wood follow Hwy. 55 north and take 335 to the right at Barksdale. This is another nice ride, lots of diversity which you will follow to Hwy. 41.  At 41 go right. This will be the boring part of the ride, but follow it for 20 or so miles and go right on 336. Many cattle guards on this leg. Some don't care for it, but personally I think it has "Texas" merit. Anyway follow it back to Leaky..BUT before Leaky, turn left at Hwy. 83 and proceed north. If you see the Turnout Over Look sign stop for it. Great photo opportunity, otherwise follow 83 to 39. Grab 39 right off 83 and follow. 39 becomes very scenic as it follows the river beside it.

Final Leg) Follow 39 to FM 1340 and go left. After a short run you will see the Stonehenge replica on the left. Lots of parking so stop for photos, then return to 39 from the same route and go left towards Ingram. At Ingram follow Hwy. 27 back to Kerrville.
